The defeat of Germany in World War I effected almost every province east of the Oder-Neisse rivers. The province of Posen and Westprussia ceased to exist. Border counties with an overwhelming majority of Germans became, after the plebiscite, part of Pomerania, Eastprussia, Silesia or Ost-Brandenburg respectively. Which meant many counties were divided among ethnic voting patterns. This site will bring some clarification into the confusion which exist in regards to a county’s location. Keep in mind that this database is giving you locations of towns in provinces prior to 1919 plebiscites. The Treaty of Versailles went into effect on January 10, 1920. Changes for Westprussia The Treaty of Versailles gave Poland acces to the Baltic Sea with the establishment of the so called Polish Corridor, but separated Eastprussia from the rest of Germany. The city of Danzig/Gdansk and some surrounding area became the Freistaat Danzig. Article 100 of the Treaty of Versailles dealt with this area, which came under the jurisdiction of the League of Nation. Changes for Eastprussia The counties of : Heydekrug, Memel became part of Lithuania. Changes for Westprussia The counties of : Elbing, Marienburg, Stuhm, Marienwerder, Rosenberg became part of Eastprussia. Changes for Posen The largest part of the province became polish. After the plebiscite the territory with a majority of German inhabitants stayed German. In all cases territory was given to the adjoining provinces. Note: Only part of the former counties were given to the respective provinces Fraustadt to Silesia Babimost to Silesia Meseritz to Brandenburg Schwerin to Brandenburg Filehne to Pommern Czarnikau to Pommern Kolmar to Pommern
